In spring 2018, I took a few Cuckoo Flowers (Cardamine pratensis) with Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) eggs attached to them home and continued breeding them. In the spring of the following year, the butterflies hatched from the pupae that had overwintered outdoors: first the males.

In spring 2018, I had planted the Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) plants that had been eaten by Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) caterpillars in a damp spot in my garden. In the spring of the following year, I was surprised to find Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) eggs on these plants. This is one of the caterpillars that hatched from them.

I had taken a few Cuckoo Flowers (Cardamine pratensis) home from Venusberg, each with an Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) egg. At home the caterpillars soon hatched and after a few weeks they pupated. The picture shows one of the chrysalis about 4 weeks after pupation.

Egg of a Small White (Pieris rapae) in Bonn-Kessenich
There is always a pot of Garden Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) in the half-shade at the entrance to my house during the summer. I regularly find individual eggs of Small White (Pieris rapae) there, but also egg clutches of Large White (Pieris brassicae). Newly hatched caterpillars rarely survive the first few days, apparently they are food for other animals. Caterpillars that have moved into the breeding box are often parasitised, especially by Large White (Pieris brassicae).

After seeing a Southern Small White (Pieris mannii) in my front garden for the first time prior year, I planted two Evergreen Candytufts (Iberis sempervirens) in my garden. Just one week later, I found a few tiny caterpillars of the Southern Small White (Pieris mannii). I hadn't expected that! The photo shows one of these caterpillars a few days later.

On 07/07/2021 I had observed a female Southern Small White (Pieris mannii) laying eggs on a potted Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) in my garden. Two days later, the flower pot was moved to my caterpillar breeding box. About 2.5 weeks later, I discovered a caterpillar on the still abundantly leafy Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens). A further 1.5 weeks later, a total of 17 (!) firmly spun Southern Small White (Pieris mannii) pupae were found. The Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) only had about 10% of its original leaf growth left.
