The Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) specimen looked quite battered, there was no longer a hint of the yellow of the edges. In fact, the edge was almost transparent! However, the butterfly was able to fly perfectly, hovering on the same cut branch (willow?) every time.

Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) attracted by a UV lamp
Robert Petschar was actually looking for butterflies in the Bangser Ried at the Austria/Switzerland/Liechtenstein-triangle as part of a night excursion when this Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) was surprisingly attracted by the UV light.

Sunbathing Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa)
In late March, Robert Petschar came across three Camberwell Beauties (Nymphalis antiopa) in the Grosses Walsertal, a biosphere reserve with rare animals and plants. The V-valley there is crossed by the River Lutz, which still had plenty of water even in this dry month in 2022. The Camberwell Beauties (Nymphalis antiopa) were quite localised. You can clearly see that the blue spots change colour between purple and light blue in the sunlight. You can also see the fine hairs that cover the small butterfly's body.

They were always flying back and forth between the edge of the forest on the Breitach and the sunny beehives.

Nymphalis antiopa ssp. lintnerii and Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis)
3 May 2012 was a significant day. The first influx of Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis) (Question Mark) had already occurred in mid-April. But on 2 May, there was another very large wave of immigration that reached the land area of southwestern Ontario, particularly at Point Pelee. Also involved were Camberwell Beauties (Nymphalis antiopa) Nymphalis antiopa ssp. lintnerii and huge numbers of very large, very dark Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis). Apparently the butterflies reached High Parc in Toronto on their second day in Canada. The High Parc is about 1.6 * 1 km in size and is surrounded by the city. However, it is close enough to Lake Ontario that unaccustomed immigrants often arrive. For Toronto residents, this is the best place for butterfly watching.

The Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) kept me company for a good 40 minutes in a sparse birch grove in the Botanical Gardens in Berlin-Dahlem: The following sequence of events was repeated: It sat on the gravel path or birch trunk for about 5 minutes and basked in the sun. Then it flew up, turned a few laps in rapid flight with strong audible wing beats and finally settled down again to sunbathe.

For a fortnight in August 2009, stored beech trunks attracted a large flock of insects. In the Reinhardswald, the southern edge of the Weserbergland, the Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) is rather rarely observed - less regularly than Poplar Admiral (Limenitis populi) and White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) or Purple Emperor (Apatura iris) and more recently also Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia).

An Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) sucking on a gravel path in the Osterwald near Zingst
Jens Rathcke: "During our hike through the Osterwald forest near Zingst on the Darß, we noticed a butterfly that I had never seen before. It accompanied us for several hundred metres along the ‘Kavalliersschneise’ hiking trail. The butterfly always flew a few metres ahead, landed on the path and flew up again when we had come within one or two metres."

Habitat of Camberwell Beauty's (Nymphalis antiopa)
An Camberwell Beauty (Nymphalis antiopa) was chasing another much smaller butterfly at high speed shortly before the photo was taken. The two butterflies flew about 3 metres above the river. The climate inside the gorge is cold and damp, and warm and damp in open areas such as the bridge photographed. The slopes of the gorge are exposed to the north/south at this point. A Large Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros) was also sighted not far away.
